The Ancient Superfood Spirulina

How ironic it is, that the Western world is so advanced but it is only now that we are identifying and using what other cultures and civilizations have been using for years. Spirulina is another recent natural beauty making headlines in the health and wellness industry, that has been used for centuries and centuries.

In fact, Spirulina was first used by the Aztecs, to treat illnesses and boost immunity. It grows in the water in hot climates and has been a popular home remedy for many years. It is an algae, with an phenomenally high protein content, rich in Vitamin A and B’s and it is also rich in iron, chlorophyll and phosphorus. Spirulina is great for people all round, but in particular it is re-known for its endurance boosting abilities so is great for athletes, it’s anti-oxidant properties and it’s ability to lower blood pressure.

With all good things, the taste is not often as delightful as one may hope, and Spirulina can have a somewhat bitter taste, and is great blended in a juice or smoothie with green fruits, consumed in yoghurt, or taken in the form of capsules. Or, if you’re really hardcore, you can have it in hot or cold water.

As it is an algae, it is not suitable for people with seafood allergies, and as always, if you are taking any medication, please ensure it is safe to take it alongside the medication.
