Feel it in your gut?
Sadly, we won’t be discussing gut instincts or the sixth sense today.
The focus today is on the charming subject of gut health- and how a healthy gut is vital for our health. Our food is broken down in the gut and the nutrients are released into our bloodstream. A healthy gut contains healthy bacteria and cells that repel viruses and harmful and inflammatory bacteria. The microorganisms are balanced in the digestive tract.
Scientists have identified that there is a strong association between harmful bacteria and disease. Poor gut health has also been linked to anxiety and depression. The gut and brain have a strong connection- they communicate information back and forth. So, how do we maintain a healthy gut?
- Reduce stress- have you ever noticed that under extreme nerves or stress you bloat or need to run to the bathroom more frequently? This is due to a disruption between the brain and the gut and the microorganisms become out of balance. Stress management techniques therefore are vital.
- Take probiotics. Research suggests that probiotics prevent gut inflammation and promote healthy gut bacteria. You can take probiotics in the form of food such as yoghurts or fermented foods, or supplements.
- Eat fermented foods. Fermented foods are a natural source of probiotics. Kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut are popular examples of fermented foods.
- Consume less sugar and sweeteners. High levels of sugar and fat have been found to negatively affect the gut microbiome.
Incorporating the above suggestions into your lifestyle and diet would be greatly beneficial for your physical and mental well being, since the gut is linked to many activities within the body.
