COVID-19: Why Fear and Stress Weakens the Immune System

The entire world has gone into panic mode. Supermarket shelves are emptied within seconds, pharmacies are full of people buying precautionary items and retailers are fed up from being asked if they stock any hand gel.

Society has gone into a frenzy over COVID- 19. Ironically people are flocking in herds to join a queue full of potential carriers of this new disease. This frantic mental state places a strain on the mind and body and by worrying to such a significant and selfish extent, one can weaken the body’s chances of fighting off viruses.

The first people who should be concerned are the elderly and the vulnerable. Yet they are now having to deal with the results of panicking crowds who fail to acknowledge that their own frenzied shopping sprees have caused the scarcity in the shops. But worrying does not help the situation. Worrying to such an extreme scale is almost convincing the mind and body that the virus is inevitable and you are succumbing to it

Stress is one of the biggest killers. Stress alone can trigger diseases in the body, so it can of course weaken the immune system. A weakened immune system can make people more susceptible to viruses.

In light of the new pandemic, the best thing to do is be vigilant. If you are vulnerable, follow advice and be vigilant with washing your hands. When touching anything in public, such as pens, card machines, products, be careful to not touch your face and wash or sanitise your hands at the first opportunity. Keep social interaction to the minimum, accept that you need to self-isolate and enjoy the opportunity to have your own personal space. Focus on how to boost your state of mind and immune system and keep the body as mobile as possible.
